We wanted to celebrate the work completed on the very magnificent property Kiln Quay House. We are featuring in the June edition of Cornwall Life Magazine.
Biggest contract successfully achieved in historic home.
Furniture design company Samuel F Walsh has just successfully completed its biggest commission to date.
Led by expert craftsman Sam Walsh, the team have transformed the kitchen, utility room, boot room, bedroom and study in historic Kiln Quay House, Flushing. Famous for having been dismantled and moved from its former location in Sussex, the Grade II listed Tudor-style home was re-built where it now stands by its then owner, heiress Joan Beech, in 1919. She loved a sea captain who lived in the village but also loved her house, so she moved it to be with him – lock, stock and barrel.
The re-design involved making bespoke painted tulipwood, oak and oak burr cabinets for the kitchen, creating a curved island section to divide the cooking and dining areas and fashioning an oak burr counter top pantry that includes internal spice racks, curved doors and open bookshelves. The solid oak drawers are dovetail jointed and run on soft-close runners, a tall section incorporates a large, American-style fridge, a pull-out larder and a built-in microwave and a double Belfast sink has instant, boiling water from the tap.
In the study, a hand-crafted ‘partner desk’, made from American black walnut, oak and oak burr complements made-to-measure bookcases.
“It was a real privilege to work in such a beautiful property,” said Sam. “Our clients were very involved throughout the entire process and we’re all delighted with what has been achieved.”
Having established the business in Krowji, Redruth, in 2011, Sam has seen it grow over the years with the addition of full-time employee Nathan Richards four years ago and, more recently, apprentice Jack Eggleton. Sam’s wife Sarah also looks after the marketing.
“Sam loves the artistic challenge that every new job presents, whether the setting is contemporary or traditional,” said Sarah. “Setting, atmosphere and period are all integral to the creative process and, as Kiln Quay demonstrates, the end result is stunning.”
